Dogwood blossoms have long been associated with the Christ and his crucifixion. The symbolic meaning of the dogwood is in the flower's resemblance to this event and lies in the following ways. The beautiful white flower has four petals, two long and two short, which make them resemble a cross. Each petal has a nail shaped "piercing" on each of its tips that are tinged with a rusty or reddish-brown color which is reminiscent of the blood Christ shed during his crucifixion. The green cluster of stamen in the center of the blossom is reminiscent of the crown of thorns he was forced to wear. Because of this symbolism, the dogwood blossom has long been regarded as nature's reminder of the sacrifice that was made on the cross for all mankind.
